Yes, we all know the ‘Blur or Oasis? Answer: Pulp’ line, but it has to be said, looking at the lineup for this year’s bash, there was some rationale behind the quip. Six entries in total, with the top two spots secured, only the second time on the whole history of the 50 that this was to happen? That’s some achievement. However, Dreadzone were no slouches themselves. It has been said that Peel’s audience finally discovered dance in the shape of their album Second Light: whether an exaggeration or not, the band also had six entries altogether, and thus the chart has a slightly more eclectic feel, and is slightly more representative of what Peel was actually playing than hitherto (just to take one example, Dave Clarke’s Red Three at number 46). Moreover, the Wedding Present had only one entry and that with a song that was only available at their gigs, but that rounded out the top three.
Once again, the edited shows (albeit high quality ones) are what’s available of the two Festive Fifty shows, broadcast on Friday and Saturday, 29-30 December.
The world of football took a hefty clump to its reputation with this:
Yahoo! was founded in March, in April the Oklahoma City bombing killed 168 people, and at the end of the same month, a gas explosion in Daegu, South Korea killed 101 people, mostly teenage schoolboys. Superman actor Christopher Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down in May after a riding accident, and in August Microsoft released Windows 95. The top grossing film of the year was this:
A tragic musical year it was when Dire Straits and the Grateful Dead split up (it says here). the big hit on BBC One was their adaptation of Pride And Prejudice, and we lost Kenny Everett, Doug McClure and Paul Eddington. After all that doom and gloom, buy something!
