It’s that time again…and on Wednesday 11 July I will try to figure out how I got from the picture on the left (me in my school uniform when I was 14) to the ugly great number on the right without ever going water-skiing, travelling to Australia, or seeing Helter Skelter (the only time they ever showed it, I was sent to bed early :-( ). To all my friends on the blogosphere, thanks for all your comments and support over the past couple of months, and I hope for many more years to come. All your blogs are linked, but a special hurrah to Lee, Mick, Ally, Adam, Crash and Davy…wonderful people all.
I hope the connection between these songs is obvious. No party for me, though, as I’m working most of the day on Wednesday :-(. A teacher’s work is never done…
Had JP lost interest in the band by the time this hit the UK charts (FF 1982 #50), after he admitted that only this band’s singer and his wife could ever get him to sing on a record? Maybe Clare Grogan had relied too heavily on the cutesy-wutesy little girl image mercilessly lampooned by Not The Nine O’Clock News (‘Happy happy happy…I still wear a nappy’…how I miss that show: and here’s the clip I was referring to, in rather grotty quality, I’m afraid:)
Here’s the TOTP performance, and who the hell are those five Sharons front stage right? Legs & Co? They’re bloody awful, whoever.
Stretching a point, I know, but a good excuse for including Nick Cave’s sophomore band. Damn fine track (FF 1981 #19, All-Time FF 1982 #28). Here it is, live at the Hacienda 1982 (worth seeing for Nick’s hair):
Altered Images, Happy Birthday: Plus
Associates, Sulk: Remastered
Birthday Party, Junkyard
Sugarcubes, Life’s Too Good
